Bom Jesus do Monte, 30 minutes from your pool
Picture climbing the famous baroque stairway of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga in the morning, wandering among the chapels, fountains and stone angels that rise up the hillside, and then returning in the late afternoon to a house that is entirely yours, with the pool waiting in the garden. That is exactly what Alojamento Rio Neiva offers: a peaceful country base in Tregosa (Barcelos), about a 30-minute drive from the most iconic sanctuary in northern Portugal.
Bom Jesus is one of the great jewels of European baroque and is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. Its monumental zigzag stairway is a lesson in devotion and geometry, with the senses, the virtues and the fountains marking each landing. If you'd rather spare your legs, you can ride up on the Bom Jesus funicular, the oldest water-balance funicular still running in the world — a short, gentle journey full of history, opened back in 1882.
Faith, culture and rest in a single day
The great advantage of staying with us is being able to combine your visit to the sanctuary with everything else Braga has to offer, without ever giving up your peace and quiet. After climbing to Bom Jesus, it's well worth heading down into the city's historic centre — Braga Cathedral, the Largo do Paço, the Theatro Circo and the century-old cafés are all minutes away. Nearby, too, is the Sameiro Sanctuary, with one of the widest views over the Minho.
On your return, the house is all yours. There are no shared rooms and no neighbours down the hall: you rent the entire house, with a private outdoor pool, a garden, a traditional granite barbecue and a spacious lounge with a ping-pong table for lazier days. It's the perfect formula for families or groups of friends who want to combine religious and cultural sightseeing with genuine rest.
