The Minho's biggest festival — and the best way to experience it
The Festas de Nossa Senhora da Agonia in Viana do Castelo are the largest religious folk festival in Northern Portugal, held every year in mid-August, around the 20th. For almost a week the city bursts with colour: the Mordomia parade with its traditional costumes and gold, the ethnographic procession, the flower carpet, the giant figures, the brass bands, the riverside arraial and the spectacular fireworks over the River Lima that close the festival. It's one of those events you experience once and never forget.
The flip side is well known to anyone who has been: Viana fills up, traffic gets tricky and accommodation in the city itself sells out months ahead. The smart move is to sleep close by, but away from the crowds — which is exactly what Alojamento Rio Neiva, a whole holiday home with private pool between Viana and Braga, offers.
A peaceful base ~30 minutes from Viana
We're in Tregosa, Barcelos, in the heart of the rural Minho, about 30 minutes by car from Viana do Castelo's historic centre. Close enough to come and go from the festivities at your own pace, and far enough to return to silence, birdsong and a dip in the private pool at the end of the day.
The house is entirely yours — no sharing with strangers, and no platform commissions when you book directly. Perfect for families or groups who want to enjoy the Agonia in comfort.
- Whole house for up to 8 guests, with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Private outdoor pool and garden — ideal for recovering after the festival nights.
- BBQ and outdoor dining area for group dinners.
- Fully-equipped kitchen, coffee machine, fast Wi-Fi and heating.
- Free private parking for several cars — a real luxury during these days.
- Pet-friendly: your pet is welcome too.
How to plan your festival days
With the house as your base, the plan is simple. In the morning, rest, have breakfast in the garden and enjoy the pool. In the afternoon and evening, head up to Viana for the concerts, the parade and the fireworks. To avoid the heaviest traffic, you can park outside the centre and use public transport or a taxi on the busiest days.
And since there's something happening almost every day, you can mix it up: one day of Agonia in Viana, another at Cabedelo or Esposende beach (~15 min), an afternoon exploring Barcelos (~10 min) or Ponte de Lima. For ideas, see our guide to what to visit between Viana and Braga.
Book early — the Agonia sells out
This is the most important takeaway on this page: book well in advance. The Festas da Agonia dates are among the most sought-after of the year across the Alto Minho, and a whole house with a pool half an hour from Viana is exactly what runs out first. The earlier you confirm, the better your chances of securing the right dates and the best price — always direct, no commissions.
