Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal, 45 minutes from calm
Some cities you visit; others you feel. Guimarães is firmly the second kind. This is where Portugal was born, and its medieval old town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — keeps that memory alive in every cobbled street, every granite balcony, and in the famous "Aqui Nasceu Portugal" (Portugal Was Born Here) inscription beside the walls. The Castle of Guimarães, with its seven towers, and the imposing Palace of the Dukes of Braganza are unmissable, as are the Largo da Oliveira square and the cable-car ride up to Penha, with views over the whole region.
From Tregosa, in Barcelos, you reach the centre of Guimarães in about 45 minutes by car via the A11 motorway. It's the perfect distance: close enough for a full, unhurried day of sightseeing, yet far from the bustle and the higher prices of sleeping in the city itself. Drive in for the morning, lose yourself in the medieval lanes over lunch, and by late afternoon you're back somewhere where all you hear is the Neiva river and the birds.
A whole house just for your group, with a private pool
Alojamento Rio Neiva isn't a room or a shared apartment: you rent the entire house. There are 4 bedrooms sleeping up to 8 guests, three bathrooms (two of them adapted for reduced mobility) and, outside, a private outdoor pool surrounded by garden, with no neighbours sharing the space. After a day climbing the historic streets of Guimarães, nothing beats a sunny swim and dinner at the traditional granite barbecue.
Inside you'll find a large open-plan living area with a ping-pong table, a fully equipped kitchen (with a capsule coffee machine to start the day right), free Wi-Fi, heating and free parking at the door. And because we know family sometimes has four paws, the house is pet-friendly. See it all in our photo gallery.
A base for far more than Guimarães
The great advantage of staying in the countryside, in the heart of the Minho, is being able to combine Guimarães with everything around it without changing accommodation. Within easy reach you have:
- Braga and Bom Jesus — about 30 min away, perfect for pairing with Guimarães on a two-city history trail.
- Barcelos — ~15 min, home of the famous market and the legendary Rooster.
- Viana do Castelo and Santa Luzia — ~25 min, with the Minho beaches (Esposende/Ofir) just ~20 min away.
- Ponte de Lima — ~30 min, the oldest town in Portugal.
- Peneda-Gerês National Park — around 1 hour, for a day of pure nature.
Porto Airport is about 45 minutes away, making arrivals and departures very simple. Want ideas for your itinerary? Take a look at our blog with guides to the region.
